Weekly Breakdown

Week 1: Handbuilding Basics – Pinch & Coil Techniques

– Learn about different clay stages, essential tools, and studio best practices
– Create your own pieces using pinch pots and coil-building methods
– Explore shaping, joining, and handling clay with care

Week 2: Texture & Surface – Mishima and Sgraffito

– Apply underglaze and carve intricate designs using the sgraffito technique
– Use the Mishima technique for fine-line surface decoration
– Dive into line work, contrast, and pattern to personalize your pieces

Week 3: Slab Building – Constructing with Clay Sheets

– Roll and shape clay slabs into trays, cups, boxes, or decorative pieces
– Learn how to securely join slabs and add details like handles or feet
– Focus on clean construction and imaginative forms

Week 4: Glazing Prep & Final Touches

– Review and refine your work in preparation for glazing
– Learn glazing basics and explore color options
✨ Glazing Note: Some Week 3 projects may not be dry enough to glaze in Week 4. Since clay must be completely dry before firing (to avoid cracking or explosions in the kiln), a separate glazing session will be scheduled after the course ends to ensure your pieces are safely fired and finished.

What to Bring

– Our studio is cold in the winter and hot in the summer
– please dress accordingly
– Please wear comfortable clothes that you do not mind getting messy!
– We highly recommend trimming long nails ahead of class to make the process easier!
